Maybe you’re training for a triathlon. Maybe you just want some practice before you take your kids to the community pool. If you’re hoping to improve your swimming skills, here are five ways to become more comfortable in the water.
1. Do Some Research.
What’s the difference between a breaststroke and a backstroke? How do you perform a butterfly stroke? You don’t have to get into technical details if you’re still a beginner, but it can help to know the various arm, leg and head positions that you can use in the water.
There’s more than one way to swim, so if Method A isn’t working for you, consider Method B.
2. Create a Swimming Schedule.
You won’t become a good swimmer without practice! Try to schedule a trip to the pool at least 2-3 times per week.
Give yourself goals and objectives like “complete 10 laps” or “swim for 10 minutes without stopping for breath.” As you get more comfortable in the water, your goals can grow with you.
3. Watch Practice Videos.
You can find everything on the web these days, including swimming tutorials.
It doesn’t matter if you’re looking for basic floating tips or advanced breaststroke kick drills; someone out there has uploaded a video for it. Once you’ve located it, you can use it over and over again to perfect your swim.
4. Reach Out to Others.
To improve your swimming skills, sign up for swim classes at the local community center.
Take your kids to the beach and let them time your strokes, flips and dives. Ask your spouse to go shopping with you for swim goggles.
It won’t even feel like practice when you’re having fun, so don’t be afraid to get your friends and family involved with your new swimming goals.
5. Learn How to Breathe.
Breathing is an important part of swimming. There’s more to it than simply holding your breath underwater!
For example, you’ll need to know when to breathe during sidestrokes and when to inhale or exhale during a dive. Some of these things you can learn from videos and tutorials; others will need to be discovered on your own.
