Most Popular Ways to Travel in The United States

The United States is a very large nation filled with interesting places to discover and many opportunities for travel.

Many of the top tourist destinations in the U.S. are considerably spread apart, which means that travelers are often faced with covering great distances for the purpose of getting to know this nation.

With the above in mind, here are the most popular ways to travel in the U.S.:

1. Driving.

The thrill of the open road is practically an element of the American Dream.

Cruising down long and perfectly engineered highways is an activity that has been epitomized by countless Hollywood films, and it is something that many Americans associate with freedom.

Driving across the U.S. is certainly one of the best ways to see the country and to experience its amazing landscapes.

The American interstate and federal highway systems are very conducive to road travel. From rest areas to tourism districts located a short distance away from the off-ramps, getting to know the country by means of driving is a memorable experience.

It is worth mentioning, however, that driving on the open road is not the same as driving around the major metropolitan areas.

Southern California, for example, has developed in sprawling ways, which means that getting from a Los Angeles hotel to a nearby major attraction could take more than an hour even though the distance is less than five miles.

Foreign drivers who arrive in the U.S. with an international driving permit and a credit card can easily rent a car and even ask for a convertible for the ultimate experience. Lack of a credit card may require depositing a few hundred dollars in cash and having to pay additional fees.

2. Flying

Air travel within the U.S. is quite an improvement from the difficult experience of arriving from overseas. The security checkpoints are far more relaxed and the entire process flows a lot smoother.

Nonetheless, the cost of domestic flights and airport transfers is not within the reach of those traveling on a budget.

The best strategy for domestic air travel within the U.S. is to watch fares closely and avoid flying on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays.

When tickets are booked at least three weeks in advance, the chances of getting reasonable fares greatly increases. Purchasing only non-refundable tickets and avoiding red-eye flights are also good ways to save.

3. Bus.

Getting to know the U.S. by bus may not be the most glamorous way to travel. However, it is the most affordable and convenient for people traveling by themselves.

Nearly all the major cities and the most popular tourist attractions can be reached by bus, and the daily timetables are reasonable.

Overnight travel is usually in higher demand while daytime travel is generally preferred for sightseeing.

For the most part, bus travel in the U.S. is relatively safe. Nonetheless, riders should keep an eye on their belongings. Women traveling by themselves should try to seat closer to the driver.

4. Train.

The Amtrak system does not even come close to the rail systems in Europe, and this is a shame since some of the routes are spectacularly scenic.

One of the problems with American train travel is that it tends to be seasonal and quite expensive in comparison to the air and bus options.

Reservations are not easy to come by on the most scenic routes, and the waiting times at various stations can last several hours.
