What Is a Computer Systems Analyst?
A computer systems analyst is someone who analyzes a current IT set up and then creates solutions to improve it. Generally, they will work closely with managers in a business and IT staff to learn about a system and get to know its issues. Then, using their IT skills, they create new systems or implement changes to the existing systems to increase functionality, improve efficiency and make them more effective overall. An analyst will work with hardware and software. Testing is also done by the analyst. He or she will also provide training on how to use the new features or system.
What Training Is Needed?
To become a computer system analyst, you will need a bachelor’s degree. You can easily find computer science or information technology degree programs online to allow you to get the training you need. Taking some business courses is also a good idea because of the nature of an analyst’s business. You will work closely with business professionals, so understanding their goals and needs is helpful.
Some employers may prefer that you have a master’s degree, or you may need one to advance your career. Again, you should have no trouble finding appropriate online degree options in the field at this level.
Beyond earning a degree, you may want to continue your education throughout your career by taking enrichment classes or completing certificates. This will allow you to stay on top of trends and changes in the industry. Staying abreast of new developments is essential since the computer field is constantly changing.
How Much Could I Earn?
If you do land a job as a computer systems analyst, then you should be quite happy with the earning potential. The median annual wage in 2015 was $85,800. The highest earners got a wage of $135,450. However, even the lowest earners weren’t doing too shabby at $51,910. The best news, though, is that you probably won’t have any trouble finding a good job. The outlook for jobs in this career is an expected 21 percent growth from 2014 to 2024.
Is This a Good Career for Me?
While this is a great career field with nice job prospects and good earnings, it isn’t for everyone. Part of your online learning experience will be finding out if you really have a knack and passion for this field. As you are completing classes, you may learn that there are aspects of IT that you don’t like or that you are more drawn to. As an analyst, you will need to be interested in troubleshooting and fixing problems. You have to well-versed in hardware and software. You should understand how to put together a system that is user-friendly. You also need to be able to help people who might be technically challenged to understand how to use a system.
There are many aspects to this job, so it is important to assess your skills. If you are good at getting to the bottom of problems, then this could be a great career choice. However, if you struggle with understanding any aspect of how software and hardware work, then this wouldn’t make a good career choice. You need to be honest about your skills.
Keep in mind that if you earn a bachelor’s degree in computer science or information technology that you can qualify for a range of different IT careers. You aren’t stuck with being a computer systems analyst. So, don’t get discouraged if you start to feel that this isn’t the career for you. There’s a much bigger IT world out there for you to explore.
