We’re all playing the game of life every day – completing quests, trying to level up, competing with others and ourselves, and having goals to reach.

Some consider it hard, refuse to play and decide to be spectators – living the average life and never seeing themselves become who they are meant to be.

For others, it’s a challenge.

They struggle, try hard, gain knowledge and experience and try to get to the next level. But they don’t enjoy it.

Then, there are those who play with their heart and soul, who enjoy every new task, achievement and level.
Who don’t try to take something from others in order to move forward, who do it for themselves, who always have a smile on their face and accept defeat as a lesson.

Some are born like that, others become such players. But whatever their process is, they make something beautiful out of their life – a game that brings more happiness, passion, hustle and motivation into the world.

The game of life I’m talking about is a quest of personal development.

It means getting better in every area of your life, being 1% better each day, improving your perception, attitude, approach, skills, etc.

And just like in any other game, there are some things to do that apply to everyone:

  • describe your current level;
  • figure out where you want to be in a certain period, make a plan;
  • don’t try to skip levels;
  • accept where you are now;
  • define how the next level looks like;
  • list the things you need to do in order to get there;
  • reward yourself after each achievement;
  • stay focused, ignore distractions;
  • keep playing no matter what.

In so many ways does the real life game look like all the others we’ve ever played.

People love quests and challenges, they enjoy having goals to reach and knowing they’re getting better at something.

So why not combine all these then?

I say let’s take the passion, excitement, motivation, dedication and concentration we put into the game we play online and put it into our daily life.

Then we’d be able to achieve so much more and be even more motivated after each level, instead of tired, depressed and overwhelmed as in real life.

Level Up Life

Lucas Johnson – a designer/developer from Toronto, Ontario – gives us a great, easy and free way to gamify our life.

He created Level Up Life – a role-playing game that lets you track your daily achievements and gain motivation while progressing.

He explains more about it in an interview for Let’s Reach Success, and shows us how similar it is to the game we play in real life.

Here are the questions Lucas answered:

1. How did you come up with the idea of the game?

In my younger years I had a lot of trouble motivating myself. Level up Life is something that I wish existed but didn’t.

What if we treated our everyday accomplishments in life like progressing in a video game?

It’s inspired by RPG games that so many of us love. And they are more beneficial than we assume.

At the early levels, things seem impossible, but by not giving up, you face your challenges, gain skills and get stronger.
Eventually, you’re looking back and remembering when you felt you couldn’t handle it. Just like life.

2. What is “Level Up Life” and how does it work?

Level Up Life is an web game where you track your real-life accomplishments, big or small, and gain XP (experience points) and skill points.

The in-game achievements are designed to be tasks that do some good, whether it’s for yourself, for others, or the world in general. Things that have some kind of impact, as little as it may be.

These achievements span different categories like travel, fitness, finances, social, learning, art, and more.
As you play, you level up and unlock more challenges that get more difficult, but more rewarding.
You can also add your own custom challenges and assign points to them. It’s part game, part motivational tool, part journal, part online community.

3. We need to reach a required level to access the next achievement. Is it like that in real life too?


For example, say you’re getting into cooking. You start small – cooking yourself a simple meal from a recipe. Then the recipes get more complex, and you try working with different foods you never used before.
Before you know it, you’re cooking for your whole family, or creating your own recipes.

We already level up in life without realizing it!

4. There are also ‘once in a lifetime’ achievements. What can you say about them?

Many of the achievements are things we try to do once in a while, or even daily.

However, there are some that you keep track of almost like a “bucket list”– something you can say you’ve done at least once in your lifetime.
For example, visit the Wall of China, go for a ride in a helicopter, finish paying off your student loan, purchase your own home, or even be in a movie or TV show.
Because these special moments are pretty rare, they reward a lot of XP.

5. You’ve created 6 kinds of points that represent different aspects of life. What are they and why did you choose them?

Aside from working to achieve certain goals, we also put time and effort into upkeeping certain aspects, like our social lives, our fitness, or our hobbies.

On Level Up Life, this is represented by six skills – Strength, Culture, Environment, Charisma, Talent, and Intellect.

Every achievement gives you points in at least one of these areas. They represent different parts of our lives that we try to keep balanced.

If you spend a lot of time working out, that’s great, but could your mental fitness use some work?
Level up Life helps you keep this balance in check.

6. I know you get a lot of feedback from people playing the game. What do they tell you?

The feedback is better than I could have ever imagined.

People are out there doing things like registering to be organ donors, volunteering for a good cause, planting trees, trying new things, getting in touch with old friends, and much, much more.

Many users have told me how Level up Life helps keep them motivated, improve themselves every day, and even gives them some direction in life.

7. What achievements do people reach the most?

One of the more popular achievement categories is a collection of the top 150 books of all time, which was collected from several sources. You unlock a few at a time as you level up, and you can track how many of these you’ve read.

A couple users have read over 100 of them!

8. Are you planning to make some changes to the game any time soon? What are you working on right now?

There are lots of features coming to the website that will add even more motivation and more fun.
But what is requested more than anything else is a mobile app! This is in the works right now and is expected to be out for Android this summer.

Leveling up in real life is not so different from what we see in games after all.

This can be a relief – it’s not that hard; a challenge – our job is to always make it to the next level; and a driving force to keep going, playing, getting better and having fun.

Meditation Mentality: Why Meditation Helps Heal

Meditating has been a form of healing and self-care for thousands of years.

Every culture has indulged in meditation in some way, although the best-known approach stems from India and is an integral part of yoga. Yoga, meaning union or to yolk, is actually one of three Vedic paths to nirvana (or escaping the cycle of re-incarnation).

Yoga, as it’s well known in the west, is usually asana, or postures. These asanas were designed so that ancient yogis could sit in seated meditation for hours (after all, you don’t want your legs cramping up while you’re trying to meditate).

However, meditating for hours is rarely recommended. Instead, practicing mindful awareness while limiting distractions for up to 30 minutes is best. Otherwise, it’s nearly guaranteed that most westerners will get distracted.

Why does meditation heal and how can we bring it into reasonable daily practice?

Meditation is the practice of looking inward and acknowledging thoughts as they approach (they will) and sending them away.

Some light distractions, such as counting mala beads, can help. Others prefer candle gazing.

There are countless tools to meditation, and one of the most common is pranayama (breath control) which can also be common in western yoga classes.

Pranayama also comes in a wide variety. One of the most simple is three-part breathing where you practice equal parts inhale, holding, and exhaling. All of these tools are designed to increase the odds of a successful meditation practice. Remember: the goal of meditation isn’t a blank mind. That’s rarely possible, especially for prolonged periods of time. The goal is to lessen stimulation and look inward.

Meditation can help lower blood pressure because it’s a calming practice. Since high blood pressure is related to heart disease, the top killer of women in the US, that’s reason enough alone to add it into your daily rituals. Also, bear in mind that meditation doesn’t need to last 30 minutes – even one minute of mindfulness (preferably in a seated position so you don’t slip into a nap) can be beneficial.

Many addicts say meditation was a key part of their recovery.

It can help redirect the mind as is known as a means of easing cravings and dangerous habits. It takes regular practice of any habit, good or bad, for it to form (some say 30 days or another arbitrary number, but it can vary by weeks based on the person).

When pursuing refuge recovery, meditation can be a powerful tool for coping and taking control of one’s life.

Meditation is a stress relief tool, which is critical as many westerners are highly stressed and working around the clock. This can lead to breakouts, anxiety and depression, and a host of mental and physical conditions.

Most people can’t “check out” of modern society, but implementing some ancient tools of self-care can be a great option. Find out what meditation can do for you, and keep in mind you may need to try a few strategies before finding the right fit.
