how to live in harmony - What Is Your Rest and Digest Mode: The Secret to Relaxing Your Life

Peace is the highest happiness. And one great way to welcome it in your life is to learn how to live in harmony.

Harmony is deeply connected with the balance of your mind, body and soul.

As long as we can remember, we’ve always been striving for the golden mean – that state, in which we become conscious of every detail of our inner and outer world, we accept things as they are, and just then are we able to embrace the new ones.

I’m not talking about perfection here. It is a different thing – reaching excellence in everything we do and seeking for the ideal.

From a philosophical point of view, though, those who are perfect are different from everyone else, which makes them imperfect.

A lot of famous people in the history have dedicated their lives to a desperate search of that utopia, but after failing to reach it, and finally realizing how mortal and powerless they are in the face of faith, they have lost their minds.

Harmony is completely another thing.

It’s happiness, completeness, fulfillment, satisfaction, acceptance, peace and awareness.

There are a few steps we have to take in order to live in harmony.

Most of these things we are completely familiar with, and, yet, somehow we tend to avoid them. Maybe we are afraid to become the best versions of ourselves and to reach success.

Well, fear is our worst enemy and with it, we will always stay at the same level. So, overcome it, and start your journey to success by attaining harmony.

Here is what you need to do (give your mind time to get used to every change you make and be patient) :

How to Live in Harmony

1. Define where you are now.

What have you achieved? What qualities do you have? What have you learned?

Take stock of your life as it is. Write down your achievements, qualities, and the lessons life has taught you. Being honest about where you stand helps create a clear foundation for growth. If you’re feeling stuck, ask yourself why and identify the areas you want to improve.

Tip: Create a journal and document your reflections. Seeing your progress in writing makes it easier to spot patterns and areas for improvement.

 2. Define where you want to get and who you want to become.

Now answer the same questions from the step above, but for the future. Set your goals and start doing something to achieve them right away.

Visualize your future self. What goals excite you? Who do you aspire to be? Break down these ambitions into smaller, actionable steps, and start today. Even tiny actions accumulate into big results over time.

Tip: Set SMART goals—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound. This helps keep you focused and accountable.

3. Accept everything you are, have and have done.

Summarize everything you have – family, friends, home, education, qualities, achievements,  possibilities, etc. – and appreciate it.

Self-acceptance is crucial. Reflect on everything you’ve accomplished and what’s still ahead. Appreciate your journey, your support system, and your personal strengths. It’s not about perfection; it’s about progress and gratitude.

Tip: Create a gratitude list to remind yourself of the blessings in your life—both big and small.

4. Learn to listen to your mind.

It has a lot to tell you, but this can happen only if you listen to it, ask questions and respect it.

Your mind constantly gives feedback, but are you paying attention? Practice mindful listening by asking yourself questions and giving space for the answers. When you truly listen, you begin to understand your deeper desires and needs.

Tip: Spend a few minutes each day in silence, without distractions. This will sharpen your mind’s ability to communicate with you.

5. Meditate.

Meditation is the way to achieve the previous step and ultimately, live in harmony.

It’s a tool to quiet the noise and tune in to yourself.

There are various techniques and methods but they all include body and mind relaxation, concentrating on your own thought and listening to your consciousness. It takes practice, but the benefits of mental clarity, reduced stress, and self-awareness are worth it.

If you do it to clear your mind, then after a few sessions and a lot of patience and focus, amazing things can happen.

Tip: Start with just 5 minutes a day. Gradually increase your time as you become more comfortable with the practice.

6. Respect your desires and needs.

Your desires are valid. Don’t suppress or ignore them. By understanding and respecting what you truly want, you can make decisions that align with your values and aspirations.

Tip: Pay attention to what excites you or brings joy. These feelings often point to your true desires.

7. Give in order to get and satisfaction will come.

Generosity fosters abundance. When you give—whether it’s time, help, or love—you create a cycle of positive energy. The satisfaction of giving often leads to fulfillment in unexpected ways.

Tip: Find small ways to help others daily. Even a kind word can have a ripple effect on your own happiness.

8. Be grateful.

Gratitude changes your perspective. Show appreciation to the people who support you, the opportunities that come your way, and the everyday moments that make life meaningful.

Tip: Say “thank you” more often. It’s a small gesture that can strengthen relationships and uplift both you and others.

9. Do things for yourself.

Self-care isn’t selfish. Whether it’s taking time to read, pursue a hobby, or just relax, doing things for yourself replenishes your energy and makes you more present for others.

Tip: Schedule “me-time” into your week, even if it’s just 30 minutes. Consistency is key to maintaining balance.

10. Take full responsibility for everything you’ve done.

This is one of the most important qualities you need to acquire. Steve Kamb from Nerd Fitness said it best in his post.

Owning your actions, both good and bad, empowers you to make positive changes. By accepting responsibility, you take control of your future and learn from past mistakes.

Tip: When something doesn’t go as planned, instead of blaming circumstances, reflect on what you could have done differently.

11. Move on.

After accepting all your negative qualities and imperfections, you can now consciously start improving them one by one.

You will have to let some things go and welcome new ones in your life.

Letting go of past mistakes or failures frees you to embrace new opportunities. Don’t dwell on negativity. Acknowledge it, learn from it, and then consciously work on improving yourself.

Tip: When a negative thought creeps in, replace it with a positive action, like writing down a goal or taking a step toward self-improvement.

12. Learn to love your body and then make it better.

Your body is your vehicle in life—treat it with care and respect. Embrace its uniqueness and strive to improve it through exercise, healthy eating, and positive self-talk.

Tip: Start with small changes, like drinking more water or taking short walks. Over time, these habits build into a healthier, stronger version of yourself.

13. Have some quiet time for yourself.

Last but not least, to live in harmony, you need to make time for yourself.

A lot of people I know are afraid to be left alone in a room even for a few minutes. That means they are so insecure and afraid, that every fear and thought they’ve been avoiding will suddenly pop up in their mind.

It’s easier for them to indulge in the illusion of their comfort zone, which in this case is their social life. That is why they spend their free time communicating with others, even though sometimes it is just random people with whom they have nothing in common.

It is a sad picture as they are ruining their potential by surrounding themselves with unimportant acquaintances (that means that you cannot learn something from them), staying in cafes and discussing other people and events just to kill some time.

What they have to do is take some time for themselves, be alone, start getting to know themselves and realize that others aren’t the people they can truly depend on.

Have you already taken some of these steps to live in harmony? Which one do you consider most important?
