5 Tips to Help You Boost Your Confidence
Not all of us are blessed with high self-confidence. In fact, I’d even say that there are more people who struggle with believing in their worth than those with high self-esteem.
So we may all benefit from learning a couple of confidence boosting tips and tricks.
Boost Your Confidence with These 5 Tips
1. Decide that you want to be confident.
This should actually be the first step for any problem you might have. You should decide that you want to actively pursue the solution.
When it comes to confidence, a decisive attitude goes a long way, because it can help you with the second tip: acting confident even if you don’t particularly feel that way.
2. Start acting the part.
As Amy Cuddy explained in her TED talk Your Body Language Shapes Who You Are, your body can change your mind.
One quick way to become more confident is to act confident and let your behavior influence your brain.
Maintain good posture, make eye contact when you speak to people, remove self-deprecating words from your speech, and always dress to impress.
According to Doctor Cuddy, such changes in behavior could lead to hormonal changes that will permanently affect the way you feel about yourself.
3. Stay true to who you are.
Many influential self-help authors believe that the core of confidence is integrity.
The most confident people are those who know who they are and what they want in life and they stay true to that.
They know their values and beliefs and make sure they honor them in the way they live their lives. Confident people are often those who have defined their life dreams and aspirations, and are working to make their visions become reality.
With that in mind, it may be a good idea for you to start discovering who you are and being true to yourself.
4. Empower yourself.
Psychologists have what they call the Confidence-Competence Loop. What it shows is that the more competent you are in a certain area, the more confident you become.
This means that the more you know how to do something, and the more you practice it, the more confident you become in your ability to do it. And improving your competence levels in various areas of life can boost your self-confidence in general.
There are two ways you can use this knowledge: One way is to get better at the things you are already doing now by learning and practicing more, and the other way is to find something new that you enjoy and start working to get better at it.
5. Work on your self-talk.
A lot of times, self-confidence has nothing to do with the world around you, and it’s more about how you see yourself and how talk to yourself in your silent thoughts.
Unfortunately, many of us get stuck in the claws of negative self-talk. Undoubtedly, it will be difficult to muster up any confidence if you keep reminding yourself of all the things that you’re not good at and all the mistakes you’ve made in life. So try your best to focus on the positives.
Concentrate on what you can do and what you’re good at. Believe in the truth: that you have what it takes to live a successful and meaningful life. You are worthy, complete and good enough.
With all that said, remember that confidence is like a muscle. It gets stronger the more you work with it. So perhaps these tips might not work overnight, but they will hopefully help you start the journey to self-confidence. Best of luck!
